Exercise for Low Back Pain

I prescribe exercises to help complement back pain rehabilitation programmes but I’m often asked what is the single most effective exercise.

My answer?

To be honest any of them. Just start moving. Thankfully serious spinal pathology is rare and most spinal conditions and their symptoms can be improved through exercise. Start slow but just make a start. As a rule of thumb if it’s excruciatingly painful you’ll need to ease back a little and find an option that’s less painful.

Do I need to train my core stability for low back pain?

Adding in some core stability exercises to your mobility regime is a good idea when creating a solid spinal health exercise regime. If you are experiencing acute pain however, it may be sensible to work on gentle mobility exercises to begin with until the pain allows you to progress onto some core work. Exercise as pain allows should be your motto when working through episodes of pain.

What about cardiovascular exercise?

Back pain can often be alleviated through movement. Performing regular cardio exercise could help. Try gentle walking, swimming or cycling to get the blood flowing and to help warm up the muscles.
